Double Chin Injections
What is a double chin and why do I have it?
A double chin is caused by a subcutaneous layer (fatty tissue) sitting around and under your neck. They arise from hereditary reasons – some families store more fat under the chin – as well as from natural ageing as the skin around the neck sags. Some patients are not 100% happy with how their chin and jaw-line looks from certain angles and consciously stretch this area for photographs. A double chin can sometimes mask a jawline, giving the individual the appearance of carrying extra weight when they do not.
If you find that you’re self-conscious of your chin or you try to hid your chin area, this treatment could be ideal for you.
Can exercise reduce my double chin?
Exercise is always recommended for general health and well-being. However, in the cause of a double chin it can only be slightly improved with weight loss. The reason for this is because we are never able to remove fat cells which have been formed. This stubborn fatty layer under the chin can still be present in people who have had significant weight reduction. This is why many people seek options to permanently remove this fatty layer for a more defined neck and jaw-line.
How does double chin injections work?
The product used for treatment is similar to a naturally occurring molecule called deoxycholic acid that is produced by the body and absorbs fats. When injected into the submental fat (double chin) it physically destroys fat cells. As the cells are destroyed, they are removed out of your body through the lymphatic system, between 6-8 weeks, causing the double chin to shrink gradually.
Is this treatment permanent?
Double chin treatments can provide nearly-permanent results because the deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells in the area resulting in it's inability to store fat again. This means that, unless you experience significant changes in your diet or lifestyle habits, excessive amounts of fat should not develop in the treatment site at a later time.
Results from this treatment will appear gradually and become more noticeable with each treatment. Typically, patients see the best results after approximately 2-4 treatments.
Does it hurt?
At Face To Face Medical all of our injectors strive to make this treatment as comfortable as possible. Local anesthetic or a numbing cream is commonly use to reduce sensation from the treatment site during the procedure. Minimal discomfort during treatment is normal and most patients tolerate this procedure very well. Some redness and swelling can be expected post treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
The typical patient will need 2-4 treatments to see the best results. This will of course depend on the size of your double chin and the aesthetic goals you would like to achieve.
The treatments need to be performed approximately 4-6 weeks apart, so that the deoxycholic acid has time to affect the fat cells, and the lymphatic system is able to remove the dead cells from the body.
